Clinic-based vs postal aligners: what actually differs

If you've been weighing up a mail-order aligner kit, the appeal is obvious: it's cheaper on paper, and it never asks you to leave the house. But the thing you're buying isn't plastic — it's clinical oversight. And that's precisely what a postal kit removes.

With clinic-based care, a GDC-registered dentist assesses your teeth and gums in person before anything begins. Gum health, existing dental work, the roots beneath the surface — these are things a photograph you take at home simply can't show. Moving teeth that aren't ready to be moved is where at-home treatment tends to go wrong.

There's also the question of what happens mid-treatment. Teeth don't always track exactly to plan. In clinic, that's a brief conversation and an adjustment at your next review. By post, it's an email thread. The plastic is the same idea in both cases; the care around it is not.

None of this is to say postal aligners never work — for very mild cases, they sometimes do. But 'sometimes' is doing a lot of work in that sentence. If your smile matters enough to change it, it's worth having someone qualified in the room.
